Project Description

Type:

Land Project

Location:

Scope Of work

  • Kitchen and main hallway 60×120 20mm tiles sawn edge
  • Curved risers from solid block and bull nose stair thread continuing around to Stringer side, with a moulded finish.
  • Stringer to be made from one maximum two complete pieces.
  • Greek key border mosaic
  • Family crest hand crafted mosaic

Brief

The brief of this project was to find a marble that would offer veining
consistency to ensure there was pattern consistency in the floor tiles
throughout.
Initially the stair risers were to be straight, but this was changed to curved
risers at final stage of the design. The client wanted the curved stringer to
be completed in two pieces. We knew this would present challenges.
The client also wanted a Greek key mosaic border and a mosaic of the
family crest at the entrance door.

The Challenges

A number of challenges presented. Concrete stairs dimensions were too high and wouldn’t allow for the marble to run flush with the upstairs flooring. The concrete steps has to be brought back a few millimeter on each step to ensure continuity in riser height maintaining a flush finish with the timber flooring on first floor.

The stringer could not be machined in two individual pieces due to the curvature of the stairs, so we created multiple pieces and used techniques to bring the eye away from the joints.

The project ran over schedule, due to Covid-19 restrictions, but the end result was worth it.
